What’s Cooking: 23 Years of Community at Warriewood Square

We took some time to chat with George, the owner of What’s Cooking, about his journey, his passion for quality and service, and what it means to be part of the Warriewood Square community for more than two decades.

Can you tell us the story behind your store and how it all began?

What’s Cooking first opened at Warriewood Square in 2002 when George purchased the store shortly after arriving in Australia from South Africa. “It has been an absolute pleasure to serve the community for the last 23 years,” he said. What started as a new chapter quickly grew into one of the centre’s longest-standing and most beloved retailers.

What makes your products or services stand out from others?

For George, it comes down to two things: quality and service. “We pride ourselves on selling the best brands and giving the best service,” he explained. A big part of that service is thanks to store manager Margaret, who has been with What’s Cooking for 20 years. “Margaret has been with me for 20 years and is part of the community and family,” George said proudly.

Do you have a signature product or customer favourite?

When it comes to customer favourites, one brand stands out above all. “I would say it’s Maxwell & Williams,” George said. “I don’t believe there is a household in Australia that does not have a piece or two.” From timeless tableware to everyday essentials, the brand has become a staple in homes across the country.

What do you love most about running this business?

For George, the answer is simple — the people. “The best demographics and wonderful people,” he said. Over the years, it’s the connections with customers and the support of the community that have made running What’s Cooking so rewarding.

What role does the local community play in your store?

“The community supports us and gives us the best feedback,” George said. That ongoing relationship with locals has been at the heart of the store’s success and longevity, with many customers returning year after year.

What are your plans or hopes for the future of the store?

After 23 years, George is looking to the future with the same passion and determination. “We’ve been here for 23 years and we hope to be here for another 23,” he said. “Not too many businesses have lasted 23 years in one centre
